A R S I N C. H I S T O R Y A R S M I S S I O N The Armenian Relief Society (A.R.S.), a philanthropic organization, was founded in the United States of America in 1910. Soon after its inception, the primary mission of the A.R.S. was to care for the survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. After World War I and II, the A.R.S. played an important role in receiving and resettling thousands of Armenians deported from their homes.
Today, through its broad- based development and support of the Armenian network in the Diaspora, the A.R.S. has over 18,000 members worldwide.
The Armenian Relief Society (A.R.S.) Canada Region was part of A.R.S. North America until 1990 when it became a separate region, to better serve the humanitarian needs of the Canadian community. Since it assembled its first convention in 1991 in St. Catherines, Ontario, A.R.S. Canada has evolved as a vibrant and progressive entity, in keeping with long-standing A.R.S. traditions. As an independent, nongovernmental and nonsectarian organization, with affiliate entities in 23 different countries serving the social and educational needs of communities everywhere, seeking to preserve the cultural identity of the Armenian nation, and, whenever and wherever the need arises, to bring humanitarian help to all communities in distress - Armenian and non-Armenian alike - the Society pursues the following aims: To promote the spiritual and physical well being of our communities; to enhance the education of the Society's members and encourage their involvement in public service; to encourage participation in local organizations engaged in community activities and social services compatible with the principles of the Society; and to cooperate with organizations with similar humanitarian aims.
The following are a few of the A.R.S. accomplishments: Providing aid and support to the individuals and communities in need. Promoting the teaching of the Armenian language and culture by subsidizing the publishing of newspapers, periodicals and books. Establishing and helping in financing Armenian schools. Sponsoring deserving students of Armenian descent in educational institutions via a number of academic scholarships. Promoting the education of the Society's members and encouraging their involvement in public services through lectures, seminars, round table discussions and pamphlets. Encouraging members to participate, individually or collectively, in local organizations engaged in community activities and social services. Cooperating with organizations with similar objectives through joint ventures in programs designed to fulfill the needs of the community. Publishing periodicals within regions concerning the communities' needs.
