Ellada Chakhoyan

Ellada Chakhoyan is the top-prize winner soprano of the "Maria Callas International Competition" in Athens and other voice competitions in Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Moldavia. Her education at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas was followed by training at the La Scala in Milan where she received a special prize and medal from both Italy's Department of Culture and the Conservatory of Giuseppe Verdi for her "Excellence in Italian grand opera interpretation." Ms. Chakhoyan was also honored with a special diploma for best performance in the Janacek Festival in the former Czechoslovakia. Her performances as a soloist and as prima donna of the Yerevan State Opera have been broadcast on the Russian and the Armenian State Radio and Television. Ellada Chakhoyan has performed with orchestras in the United States and with the national orchestras of the Russian Federation, Poland, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldavia, and Romania.

Dubbed "the Armenian Nightingale" in Milan, Chakhoyan has appeared in major opera houses and concert halls, including the Bolshoi and the Tchaikovsky in Moscow, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Kirov in St. Petersburg, Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Kensington Town Hall in London, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, La Scala Recital Hall in Milan, Teatro Grande in Brescia (Italy), Teatro Olympic in Athens, and philharmonic halls in Poland, the former Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, the Baltic States, Switzerland, Spain, and Canada. Her New York debut was acclaimed: From the first notes one could hear the presence of a major singer with complete technical control (including a perfect command of messa di voce), authority of delivery, opulence of tone, and even sex appeal. In fact, much of her singing reminded one of the young Callas, - The New York Daily News.

... capable of both graceful phrasing and dramatic intensity... she has a good deal of power and range at her command, - The New York Times.
