Carzou (Karnik Zulumyan) is one of the leading modern French artists. He was born in Aleppo (Syria) and received his artistic training in Paris, where he settled in 1924. He achieved great success in 1953 with an exhibition of his Venetian landscapes and with his designs for the ballet "Giselle" at the Paris Opera. Carzou was awarded several major prizes and the Legion d'Honneur, and in 1978 he was elected a member of the French Academy of Arts. In the combination of elegant, fine and energetic lines - Carzou's main means of expression - the world seems to be a vision reflecting the artist's deep poetic perception of the beauty of nature and human creation. The fantastical and the concrete, faithfulness to reality and imagination come together in his works. The artist retained links with his motherland and is not only highly respected in France, but also greatly loved in Armenia. In 1992 one of the oldest churches in Manosque, the interior of which he decorated with frescoes embodying the essence of his art, became the Museum of Carzou.

Carzou (Karnik Zulmanyan) was of the leading modern Franch artists. He was born in Allepo in Syria and received his artistic training in Paris, where he settled in 1924.

He achieved great success in 1953 with an exhibition of his Venetian landscapes and with his designs for the ballet "Giselle" at the Paris Opera. Exhibitions and further theatrical designs followed quickly one after another, and he produced lithographs and books illustrations. Carzou was awarded several major prizes and Legion d'Honneur, and in 1978 he was elected a member of the French academy of Arts.

In the combination of elegant, fine and energetic lines - Carzou's main means of expression - the word seems a vision reflecting the artist's deep poetic perception of the beauty of nature and human creation. The fantastical and the concrete, faithfulness to reality and imagination come together in his works.

The whole of Carzou's art is pervaded with a sense of dark foreboding and tension. This atmosphere was born in the artist's recollection of the first world war, in the genocide og 1915, to which he was an eye witness as a child, and as his protest against injustice and violence.

And behind it all lies his dream of a beautiful, peaceful life. This humanist artist retained links with his motherland and was not only highly respected in France but also greatly loved in Armenia. In 1922 one of the oldest churches in Manoque, the interior of which he decorated with frescoes enbodying the essence of his art, became the Musee' Carzou.

ЖАН КАРЗУ (ГАРНИК ЗУЛУМЯН)

Жан Гарзу прославился как художник и иллюстратор, который иллюстрировал книги таких великих мастеров как Эрнест Хемингуэй, Альбер Камю, являлся членом Академии Изящных Искусств Франции. Помимо книг вышеупомянутых авторов, Гарзу в качестве иллюстратора работал и с многими другими известнейшими литераторами Франции. Его иллюстрации, легко узнаваемые по смысловой насыщенности при чрезвычайной лаконичности выразительных средств и оригинальности композиции, можно увидеть на страницах произведений самых выдающихся французских писателей и поэтов 20 века. Однако талант художника не ограничивался только этим жанром - он с равным успехом занимался росписью по фарфору и гравюрой, оформительством театральных постановок в Комеди Франсе и парижских оперных и балетных театрах. Он помогал в разработке дизайна внутренних помещений круизного теплохода "Франция", а в возрасте 81 года расписал часовню в городе Маноск провинции Воклюз, поверхностью в 600 кв. м. Родившийся 1 января 1907 г. в Алеппо (Сирии), Гарник Зулумян приехал во Францию в 1924г. В 1925 г. закончил парижскую архитектурную школу. После обучения в нескольких художественных школах Парижа и организации ряда личных выставок в художественных салонах столицы Франции, в 1939 году состоялась и первая официальная выставка Гарника Зулумяна, принявшего псевдоним Жан Гарзу. После этого его выставки проходили во многих странах мира, его работы выставлены в более чем ста музеях всего мира, а также его полотна изображены на почтовых марках Франции. В 1956 г. был удостоен рыцарского звания "Легиона чести". В 1977 г. он был избран членом Академии Изящных Искусств Франции и награжден Национальным орденом Франции "За заслуги". Трижды награждался премией Холлмарка, а также являлся лауреатом премии Гран-при Иль де Франс 1954 г. В 1958 г. в Брюсселе был признан победителем Гран-при Европы, а в 1955 был награжден Национальной Премией образования Японии. Скончался 12 августа 2000 года в своем уединенном загородном особняке в Марсак-сюр-Лиле (провинция Дордонь) в 93-летнем возрасте Гарзу поддерживал также связи с родиной. Он не только весьма уважаем во Франции, но и очень любим в Армении.
