On September 16, 2003, Jean-Ren? Gehan, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, conferred the medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters on Carnegie Hall's senior director and artistic advisor Ara Guzelimian. The award was given for "dedication to music, extraordinary accomplishments in the field, and for [an] open and creative mind toward all things musical."

Guzelimian was formerly the artistic director of the Ojai Festival in California and the Aspen Music Festival and school in Colorado. Since 1998, he has been responsible for program planning and development, and a range of audience education programs at Carnegie Hall.
