Steve Zaillian

Steve Zaillian was born January 30, 1953, in Fresno, California. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1975 with a degree in Cinema. His emergence as a screenwriter was with The Falcon and the Snowman in 1986, based on Robert Lindsey's book on political intrigue, and starring Sean Penn. The success of this project led to his next script for Awakenings (1990), based on the renowned Oliver Sacks book. Nominated in 1991 both for an Oscar (Best Screenplay Adaptation) and a Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award, the film won a USC Scripter Award. He made his directorial debut in 1992 with the highly acclaimed Searching for Bobby Fischer, which he also wrote. Zaillian is a master at bringing true stories to the screen. He won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1994), a gripping script adapted from Thomas Keneally's novel. It was also awarded a BAFTA Best Adapted Screenplay, a Chicago Film Critics Association Award, a Golden Globe, the Humanitas Prize, a USC Scripter Award, and a WGA Screen Award for Best Screenplay based on material previously published or produced. In 1994, Zaillian received the ShoWest Convention award for Screenwriter of the Year. His latest feature, which he wrote and is also directing, is All the King's Men, based on the Robert Penn Warren novel about populist Southerner Willie Stark, a figure who is loosely based on Governor Huey Long of Louisiana.
