Petros Kontradjian 1905-1956

Orphaned in the 1915 Genocide, 18 years old Bedros (Bedo) Kontradjian came to Paris to study art. For several years he studied in Monparnasse studios, in the studio of Fernand Leger, and in Paris museums. From 1930 he was a regular contributor to the Salons d'Automne.

Kontradjian's artistic principles took shape under the influence of Cezanne and the Cubists, but he always considered emotion to be the main foundation of his works. He loved to depict the area around Paris and the working areas of the City, the Seine and bridges across it. ln 1935 the critic Camille Moreau wrote: "I was glad to see Kontradjian 's landscapes. He has a rare vision and a sensitive feel for the true essence of those suburbs of Paris which would seem to lack any beauty."

In 1947, the artist decided to return to his homeland. Depressed by the loneliness and the unfamiliar conditions of Soviet life, he committed suicide, leaving behind him a number of superb works.
