THE ESTABLISHMENT & ACTIVITIES OF N.S.C.A. IN ALEPPO:

The NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION exists for many long years in our Armenian Community of Aleppo.

The establishing roots of this association goes back to the period when the Armenian Community was organized and when the representatives of our people, who had just survived from the claws of death, built up churches and schools next to their tin-covered cottages.

In 1921 GUILIGUIAN REFUGEES SCHOOL was established. Its graduates formed the strongest and the most active organization in the Armenian Community. This organization was encouraged by large masses of people because of its cultural, sportive, national and public achievements.

Throughout the years its activities reached such an extent that it became a must to exceed the narrow limits of the school.

Therefore, it was essential that an authorized cultural association be establishment in Aleppo. This was the NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION and it was established in 1957. The establishing members were:

Kasbar Baghdassarian. John Der Ghazarian. Ghevont Kavlakian. Haroutioun Yaghsezian. Vartan Yaghsezian. Haroutioun Najarian. Hovhannes Arakerlain.

When the Association with Foreign Countries was formed in Yerevan in 1944, who was later changed to the Committee for Cultural Relations with Armenians abroad, the NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION formed a Golden Bridge between the homeland and the Armenians abroad.

Over this bridge passed many Armenian authors, poets, artists as well as song, dance and drama groups injecting new blood in the veins and the hearts of the Armenians abroad.

In 1984 the NOR SEROUNT CUTLURAL ASSOCIATION had its dance band, the trainer and the instructor being Apig Kostanian, who is a graduate of Guiliguian College. The dance band with its high standard had spectacular performances in different countries of the Middle East and (Europe).

In 1999 the NEW GENERATION CULTURAL ASSOCIATION reformed its dance band. It now consists of 40 members and the instructor is the great Armenian artist Vanoush Khanamirian.

Our dancing band has also its child's-teenagers section ( over 100 members ), which promises a bright future.

The NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION also has a chorus for children and teenagers. It had its first performance in 2002.

The NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION issues a periodical with the title SEROUNT. It has aroused a great interest in the readers. At present the NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCAITION has established an Academy for Painting named after the famous painter Minas Avedissian. In this academy the natural talents of our boys and girls spontaneously come out.

The NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION has also got its own troupe. It is known by the name of Antranig Troupe, which was organized in Aleppo in the Twenties. Since then it has been presenting its performances with great success.

This year the NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION is celebrating its 45th anniversary arousing new interest and enthusiasm for the future activities.

On this occasion we feel indebted to all those who established the association and to all those who are contributing to the prosperity of this great organization, the NOR SEROUNT CULTURAL ASSOCIATION. We all believe that UNION IS STRENGTH.
