Founding Century: XII Founding Date : 1171 Region: Lori Location: Kober village

Kobayr monastery is perched on a shelf of a gorge, in an ancient and sacred place where springs seep out of the rock. The monument of Kober was built in 1171 by the Kyurikian princes, but became a property of the Georgian Orthodox Zakarian family Most of the inscriptions are in Georgian. Shahnashah Zakarian is buried there. The bell tower in the middle of the complex was built in 1279 to house the tombs of Mkhargryel and his wife Vaneni.

Monastery of Kobayr (Kobayr)

The monastery of Kobayr is a monastic complex and is a group of Armenian architectural monuments put up in the 12-13th centuries by Kyurikyans and Zakaryans in Tumanyan Region. It has been an important writing and cultural center. As a priory it was organized and glorified in the first half of the 13th century.

The main group of the monuments consists of three churches, a belfry, refectory, chapels, cross-stones and the remnants of the gate walls. The cross almost of the church's height strikes the eye in the eastern part. Kobayr monastery is closely combined with the single-nave monastery "Chitakhants Vank" with its underground tomb and monuments of "Gyughateghi", located in the north (church, chapels, cross-stones, remains of asylums), etc. Kobayr monastery is mainly noted for its high art murals and frescoes. Owing to the high-level of Kobayr monastery murals, they appear to be significant memorials of Medieval Armenian Monuments.

In Kobayr monastery there are still kept inscriptions written in several languages. Being rich in history and existence the monastery of Kobayr for many years has continuously been showing hospitality to us - Armenians and the foreign travelers. One cannot repress personal interest and is ready to climb the winding and hardly achievable walkways. This is how our historical, architectural and cultural majestic sites of great attraction, will take you to the Early Middle Ages.
