The main activities CRC is carrying out are as follows: creation of electronic database of Gyumri historical buildings with information on their history, architectural drawings and future prospects; Working out of economic strategy for development of these buildings; Activation of the role of community in decision making process; Dissemination of information on Gyumri urban environment among population as well as local authorities. Urban issues, Community development, etc. The CRC broad mission is to promote and support interdisciplinary strategic and applied research on urban issues, which will lead to development of livable, sustainable and attractive qualities of Gyumri City and Shirak region it is located.

Center has three mandates: research, teaching and program implementation.

The primary objective in the area of research is to provide in depth understanding of issues and problems facing Gyumri urban environment that include but are not limited to urban tourism, planning conservation and preservation, urban economy, urban geography, ecology and urban ethnography.

In the area of teaching the Center provides awareness of community members, NGOs and local authorities in urban management and governance, community participation in decision making process, dissemination and discussion of knowledge on complex processes of urban life.

In the area of program implementation the primary goal is to encourage, cooperate and promote multy-stage projects on creation of archive of historical buildings and their distribution to a wide audience through Internet and publications, development of the strategy of their reconstruction and adaptation based on combination of the business mentality with the need to preserve and promote indigenous architecture, fine arts and social life.


Projects Gyumri General Plan - Conceiving the idea and supporting the implementation (by the sponsorship of the president of the Republic of Armenia). Project proposal for reconstruction of street Alexandrovskaya. Alexandrovskaya /Abovyan/ is one of the central streets located within the historical town. The reconstruction and rejuvenation of this street could be a starting point for revitalization of the whole town center. The analysis and planning solutions are presented in this research.

Electronic database “Alexandropol 2” - Gyumri has more than 1600 historical architectural valuable fortification, cultural, public buildings and complexes, covering an area of 220 hectares and located in historical core of the town. CRC aims at taking measure to rescue the unique historical architectural and cultural documents connected with all town structures and buildings from further deterioration. In the frame of the same program CRC analyses the business possibilities and public incentives for successful, expedient development of town structures and buildings as well as rejuvenation and conservation of town historical core.
