Hovhannisyan Aram



Hovhannisyan, Aram Ованнисян Арам (b. 1984, Yerevan). Armenian composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Europe and North America; he is also active as a flautist.

Mr. Hovhannisyan studied at the Anushavan Ter-Hevondyan School of Music in Yerevan and there graduated in 1999. He studied composition with Levon Chaushyan and flute with Yevgeny Noninyan at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory from 1999-2003 and studied composition with Nicolas Bolens and Éric Gaudibert and electronic music with Rainer Boesch and Émile Ellberger at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève in 2003-04, where he has studied composition with Michael Jarrell and electronic music with Rainer Boesch since 2004. He has also participated in flute masterclasses with Aleksandr Korneyev, Laurel-Ann Maurer and Boris Previsic.

Among his honors are four awards at the Concert of Concerts in Yerevan (one award, 1997, for his work as a flautist; three awards, 1998, for Concerto-Fantasy [withdrawn]) and First prizes in the Amadeus competition in Yerevan (1998, for Chamber Symphony) and the competition of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Yerevan (1999, for Offertorium [withdrawn]). He has also received First Prize in the Aram Khachaturian competition in Yerevan (2003, for Je voudrais me souvenir...), co-First Prize in the Benjamin Britten competition in Yerevan (2003, for Between Dream and Reality) and First Prize in the Pre-Art competition for young composers in Zürich (2005, for IRAE [Cahier de tristesse No. 2]). His music has been performed throughout Armenia and in Austria, Georgia, Hungary, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the USA.

As a flautist, he has performed works by Artur Avanesov, David Balasanyan, Brian Ferneyhough, Athanasia Tzanou, Maya Virsaladze, and other modern composers. He co-founded with Artur Avanesov the new music ensemble AUS in Yerevan in 2002 and has since served as its co-artistic director.

He taught composition and flute at the Anushavan Ter-Hevondyan School of Music from 2001-03.
