“CLAY DOESN’T LIMIT YOUR FREEDOM”

Verzhine Semirjyan’s first personal exhibition of ceramics took place recently in the United Nation’s Yerevan Office. More than fifty works dated from 1985- 2000 were presented at the exhibition.

“Ceramics is my life. These works were created during different periods of my life, - mentioned Verzhine Semirjyan. I start thinking about the next work while the previous one is yet unfinished. My mind is busy all the time with new sketches. Clay is the substance that doesn’t limit my freedom”. However she mentioned that ceramics has its difficulties as well. If you let the work unfinished the clay will get dry, and then the work will get cracks and afterwards, it will be impossible to restore it.

None of Verzhine Semirjyan’s works have titles. She says: “My soul is speaking in my works. I have left others to give titles to my work the way they understand it”. Verzhine Semirjyan’s works have been exhibited several times in Armenia and abroad.

My Works Are the Reflection of My Inner World

Aristotel used to say, “ Happiness is a feeling close to perfection. ” I am sure that these words could be referred to a bright individual, artist/ceramist Verzhine Semirjyan.

A graduate from the Department of Industrial Design, at the Moscow Folk Arts Institute Distance Learning Courses, she has taught in a college, afterwards at the Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute named after Khachatur Abovian. This served as a big stimulus for her further creative work.

She had a life with losses and defeats; she has been always in searches and in the end, enduring many hardships, obtained something that saves her from all the disappointments.
Verzhine’s Astrological sign is Pisces; i.e. she is a profound, emotional, and vulnerable person. She considers her honesty both in work and life as an advantage, and her extreme courage and bravado in her actions as a disadvantage.

She is fond of Jazz. She thinks that Silence is the kind of “music” needed for her work.

Her works, which are more than one hundred pieces, were exhibited in Los Angeles, in Marseilles, where she received a Certificate. Recently, she had a very successful exhibition in the United Nation’s Yerevan Office Building. Her remarkable compositions have found their place in Germany, Japan and New York.

Her home is very simple, without any excess. The walls are decorated with her original and unique works that shine a light awakening all the best in our sub-consciousness. Verzhine Semirjyan has a very untraditional approach, means and methods towards her work. The simplicity in her works becomes exquisite, the gentle pastel tones speak harmoniously with the glaze, and the material obtains complex forms.

Q: What is your style in the arts?

A: I think Surrealism. You have to leave the boundaries of sanity when working. The life philosophy is the basis of my works, with its eternal questions and answers.

Q: Does your state of health influence your work?

A: Certainly. My previous works are simple and peaceful. They are more reserved. The new ones are more emotional and passionate. I also change with the years.

Q: What is the most important in the arts?

A: Not lying to myself, doing what I want and what I can, express what I have in my soul.

Q: What is the main mood of your works?

A: It differs. I like mild hues, transition from one color to another, and their contrast. Sometimes my works are optimistic, and sometimes they are full of anxiety and alarm.

Q: What can be a reason for your anxiety?

A: Inconveniences and problems in life, the way in which I accept certain things.

I cherish my freedom, because I understand that, but there is not much time left and I can lose my personality.

Q: What is the circle of your interests/hobbies? Do you like to be always surrounded by people?

A: My hobbies... Driving my car and traveling, regarding people...I like those who have interesting personality and are talented. I don't like to spend my time in vain. At present I need a man who would understand me.

Q: What can hurt your feelings?

A: Not being understood by the surrounding people. It is very hard and upsetting.

Q: Do you live in the present day?

A: Not always. The past, from time to time, reminds about itself. I try, but I don't always succeed to get free of my past. You have to be mature and wise for that.

Verzhine is not very eloquent in life. Her works speak for herself. They are mute poems that tell a lot, that due to the artist transform and gain their second life and immortality.
