Poghos - Petros Church (Gyargyar)

Gyargyar is situated not far from the villages Gyulakarak, Pushkino and Vardablur. On the bottom of a fascinating high-elevated hill the Poghos-Petros Church was built in the 19th century. The church is surrounded with columns, cross-stones and tombstones that are of a great historical value. The constructers of the fundemental columns and the archs was Avetik Matevosyan, whose heritage has been faithful to this church and its traditionsup to now. He died in 1914. His daughter, than grand-daughter, than grand-grand-daughter clean and take care of the church and its surroundings every day. It is an honor to see that the Armenian woman has a significant role in the spiritual life of the village. Poghos-Petros Church does not have its own priest and only on Christian or national holidays the priest from Stepanavan arrives to provide a service for the population of this village.

The church hasn't been restored yet. It is noteworthy that during the USSR totaliterian regine Poghos-Petros Church was used as an arsenal and warehouse, it was locked and inaccessable for the public as a religious center. As all Armenian churches within Armenia and outside of its boundaries, this church opens its doors in front of the public on Saturdays and Sundays. We have very limitted information on this church as it is not mentioned in many historic and architectural sources, perhaps, because it was closed for a long period of time and did not serve people, appears to be the main reason of forgetting and ignoring this obelisk.
