The Association for Foreign Investment & Cooperation (AFIC) is a non-profit, non-governmental business association devoted to the promotion of foreign investment, international economic cooperation and private entrepreneurship. AFIC was established in 1998 by a group of Armenian businessmen, representing some of the country's business circles in industry and commerce.
The main objective of the Association is to enhance the creation and development of free market relations and stable economic and investment environment in Armenia, in which private foreign companies can take risks to develop new businesses with local partners; to ensure the effectiveness of foreign investment initiatives in privatization process; to establish and develop international economic cooperation. AFIC supports the implementation of policies, which are oriented at democratic reform in economy, development of private entrepreneurship and strengthening business associations.
AFIC also has the duty of preparing information and advertisements about investment activity and policy in Armenia, and disseminating these abroad in foreign business circles. Another function of AFIC is to seek out potential foreign investors who may be interested in investment opportunities in Armenia, using the technical expertise and databases of various international organizations. The Association prepares seminars, conferences, and other events to help further business ties, utilize foreign expertise and attract foreign investment, including the promotion of business partnerships.
AFIC is ready to assist foreign investors in various areas of investment where further technical cooperation is needed in order to make the conditions move favorable for the promotion of foreign investment, provide direction, guidance and information throughout the search and negotiation process. AFIC strongly believes that there exists an integral role for foreign investors to play in the further development of the Armenian economy. For the Armenian business community take full advantage of the benefits of foreign investment, Armenian business people need to be trained in the norms of international business practices, including business ethics, management, human resources development and foreign partnerships, and in the status of Armenian business legislation. Furthermore, successful cooperation with international investors demands greater information links between Armenian businesses seeking investors and the investors themselves.
AFIC is led by its Board of Directors. These AFIC leaders take an active part in the workings of their association. AFIC's Board of Directors is composed of 9 representatives of different industrial sectors, including IT, and the Board members all take an active interest in AFIC's activities and volunteer a significant amount of their time. AFIC's activity realized by the staff, which consists of 5 members.
Projects
AFIC has developed and is implementing projects which, will alleviate two impediments to greater foreign involvement in the Armenian economy: the lack of appropriate business training on the part of the Armenians and the lack of an established information link between potential international investors and Armenian business people.
AFIC conducts seminars, conferences, training sessions, arranges business connections and works to strengthen the business association groups in Armenia. In 1999 AFIC implemented a business association training project, funded by Eurasia and organized a Conference entitled "Development of Business Associations in Armenia" in July, 2000. The event was attended by more than 60 representatives of 36 business associations.
At present time the Association is in cooperation with Eurasia Foundation and the Center for International Private Enterprise (an affiliate of US Chamber of Commerce) aimed at development of Business Association and business environment at whole in Armenia.http://www.afic.am/about.html
