At first, periodic visits by Armenian priests from the United States catered to the spiritual needs of Montreal Armenians. Starting in the late 1940's, a Parish Council was appointed by the Primate of the Armenian Church of America and then a permanent pastor was appointed. Sunday services were regularly celebrated in the chapel of St. John the Evangelist Church, graciously availed by the Anglican Church. The Armenian Holy Apostolic Church of Montreal was formally registered in 1957.

During the 1960's, as the community grew rapidly to over 10,000 members, the need for the community to have its own church was acutely felt. After due negotiations with the Fairmount St. Giles United Church of Outremont, a deed of sale was executed on June 22, 1970. Following some basic renovations and the addition of an altar in the traditional Armenian style, the formal consecration of the church was performed on December 6, 1970, with H.E. Archbishop Shnorhk Kalousdian, Patriarch of Armenians in Istanbul, presiding.
