Sourb (Saint) Hovhannes (Metsavan)

Metsavan village is in Kalinino district and is one of the Armenian's ancient villages, with rich history.

In the area of the medival cemetary in the central part of the village, Sourb Hovannes church is situated, which is restored. It refers to the half fallen parts of the walls and also reconstructions, i.e. the roof, the plasteration of the walls, the brickwork of the floor, etc. Only the lower part of the walls have remained from the original building. The only enterance is from the South. The initial building of the Church was built from large yellowish felzit stones and the renewed parts from small pink felzit stones.

From the remains of the original building one can see that with its inventions and decorations it has common features with the 13th century monuments of Lori region and according to this it can be considered as their contempeparary. In the south-eastern part of the church you may see a tombstone with Georgian manuscripts that date back to the 13th century.
