Родился 7 марта 1943 г. в Вашингтоне, округ Колумбия, и вырос в Беркли, штат Калифорния.
Авакян описывает в своих мемуарах, что, будучи молодым человеком, он имел страсть к музыке, спорте, поэзии и литературы, и эти пересекаются с его жизнью, растущие в 1950-х и 60-х годов в Беркли, города со смешанным черно-белое население, которое был отмечен дискриминации и расизма, но город, который был также становится центром развитие интеллектуального, культурного и политического брожения (которые окажут значительное влияние на всю страну). Выросший и ходить в школу и с черно-белыми друзьями, петь в ду-уоп группы и занятия спортом, Авакян опытных лично и близко преобладающих сегрегации и расизма в обществе и пути это повлияло на его черные друзья. Как молодой человек, Авакян возненавидел расизма и не потерпит никакой терпимости для белых людей, которые были расистским или не бескомпромиссно выступать против него. Он был защитником своей высокой школьной футбольной команды в Беркли Высокий. В своих мемуарах он рассказывает опыт езды на автобусе поздно ночью после игры,
Майк Эли, одним из основателей РКП и бывший редактор революции, недавно порвал с Авакян ссылкой РКП позицию, что личный статус Боб Авакян является "кардинальному вопросу".
