Souren Charekian Conductor (Дирежёр) (1901-1979)
Armenian conductor and pedagogue, People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia (1956), Distinguished Artist of Uzbekistan (1944). In early 1928 the 4th year student of Tiflis Conservatory (class of Paliashvili), was invited by Anushavan Ter-Ghevondian, newly elected President of Yerevan Conservatory, to move to Armenia in order to undertake the conductorship of the Armenian Symphony Orchestra (after Al.Spendiarian's death). During his first appearance with the orchestra in January, 1928, F.Shubert's "Unfinished" symphony, Litolf's "Robespiere", S.Glinka's 'Russlan & Ludmilla' overture and Edward Grieg's symphonic suite "Peer Gyunt" were performed.
Souren Charekian graduated from Leningrad conservatory in 1932. From 1932-34 and 1944-79 was a conductor at Yerevan State Opera Theater (1957-64 as Principal Conductor). At Yerevan Opera Theater Charekian has conducted T.Choukhajian's "Leblebiji", "Arshak II", L.Khoja-Einatian's "Namus" ("Matter of Honor"), G.Armenian's "Khachatur Abovian", and works by European composers.
From 1934-36 Souren Charekian was the Principal Conductor of Tbilisi Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Theater, and from 1936-44 Principal Conductor of State Sverdlov Opera Theater and the Ballet Theater of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Besides, he conducted the Uzbek national opera repertoire. Charekian taught at Yerevan Conservatory during the years 1927-29,1932-34,1945-48 and 1954-79 (from 1971 with the Degree in Music).
