В 1981 году Арто уезжает в США, чтобы найти новое применение своим талантам и избежать тех сложностей, которые он, как армянин испытывал в Турции. Мастера американской джазовой сцены сразу же замечают его и предлагают совместную работу. Тунчбояджан становится востребованным сайдменом и после восторженного приема у американской музыкальной общественности, решается на сольные проекты. В 1985 году он выпускает первые альбомы под своим именем "VirginLand" и "Main Root". Тогда же он встречается с одним из лучших исполнителей на уде Ара Динкджяном. В конце 80-х они создают квартет "Night Arc", который исполняет музыку на стыке жанров этно-джаза и нью-эйджа. Авторами всех композиций являются Арто Тунчбояджан и Ара Динкджан. Альбомы квартета пользуются большим успехом и расходятся по миру миллионными тиражами. А в конце 90-х они записывают и два дуэтных альбома "Tears of Dignity" и "ONNO". Последний посвящается трагически погибшему в авиакатострофе брату Тунчбояджана.
Приехав в составе этого популярного американского квартета, в который входили тогда, помимо Арто Тунчбояджана и Ара Динкджяна, клавишник Армен Донелян и басист Марк Джонсон в Ереван в 1998 году на Первый международный джаз-фестиваль, знаменитый музыкант был настолько поражен теплой встречей, оказанной их группе и ему лично на родине, что решил собрать свой собственный коллектив в Армении и играть ту музыку, которую хочется ему. Так появился его очередной проект - Armenian Navy Band. Гражданин Мира, он сейчас живет в Америке, Армении и везде, где хотят слушать его музыку.
Armenian Navy Band, по существу, является супер-группой, своеобразной командой Armenian All Stars. Так, один из ведущих музыкантов ансамбля, фантастический Армен Уснунц - без сомнений лучший саксофонист Армении, а может быть и региона, основатель и руководитель другой этно-джаз-роковой группы Time Report и по совместительству арт-директор и дирижер ГосДжаза Армении. Ваагн Айрапетян - лучший клавишник республики, один из лучших учеников великого американского пианиста Барри Харриса, неоднократно выступал в Америке, в России, на Востоке, в активе которого - два альбома, записанных с американскими музыкантами и выпущенных в США, одновременно руководит двумя разноплановыми коллективами - акустическим мейнстрим-трио и джаз-рок септетом "Катунер".
И конечно, сам Маэстро Арто Тунчбояджан, который стучит на всем, на чем стучится, поет, дирижирует, играет на буларе (созданный им самим струнный инструмент, напоминающий мандолину), заигрывает с публикой и делает еще много чего прелюбопытного, граничащего с музыкальной эксцентрикой.
В этом году "Armenian Navy Band" добился нового успеха - он номинирован престижнейшей британской радиокорпорацией ВВС на звание "Лучшей европейской группы", играющей world music. Авторитетное жюри, состоящее из ведущих теоретиков музыки, журналистов, диджеев и музыкантов к апрелю должно выбрать лучшего. Чтобы было понятно о каком уровне идет речь, достаточно посмотреть на список обладателей этой награды в прошлые годы - Салиф Кейта, Kronos Quartet, Ясмин Леви, Марица... Соперниками "Armenian Navy Band" в споре за эту награду в этом году являются Рай Кудер, Омар Суза, Двафер Юсеф, Сушила Раман::.. Имена победителей будут оглашены на официальной церемонии в Лондоне 7 апреля 2006 года.
В ходе своего первого и единственного пока концерта в России (состоится 20 февраля 2006года) "Armenian Navy Band" покажет программу, состоящую в основном из композиций с альбома 2004 года, представляющих собой некую многочастную сложную по композиции сюиту, основанную на армянских ритмах и мелосе с элементами джаз-рока, нью-эйджа, фьюжн и авангарда. Части композиции достаточно разные по духу от высокоэмоциональных с ноткой трагизма, как и большая часть истории армянского народа до веселых, удалых и жизнеутверждающих, словно свидетельствующих, что несмотря на все трудности, жизнь продолжается и народ придет к своему звездному часу. Большая доля богатой культуры и исторического наследия армянского народа в творчестве Арто Тунчбояджана и возглавляемого им коллектива очень велика и видна невооруженным взглядом.
Музыка, исполняемая ансамблем это синтез музыкального кругозора и жизненного опыта музыкантов. Высокая личная техника, сочный звук, энергия, напор и, одновремнно удивительный лиризм и романтика. А если еще добавить необычную манеру пения без слов лидера коллектива, так модный сейчас и почти обязательный дудук, замесить это все на музыке армянских гор и голубого неба, чистой родниковой воде и нежнейших абрикосов, сумасшедших ритмов современного города и жесткой энергетике сегодняшнего мира - вы получите приблизительное представление о музыке армянской группы. "Armenian Navy Band" - коллектив достаточно многочисленный (12 человек), использует разнообразные инструменты - от народных инструментов до современных. И во главе всего этого музыкального великолепия - неповторимый голос и фантастическая техника игры на восточной перкуссии Арто Тунчбояджана.

One of his greatest influences of music and life was his brother Onno, musician himself, who encouraged Arto to develop his character not just as a brother but as a friend and as a musician.At the age of 11, he began his career playing and recording traditional music with his brother establishing himself as a professional musician throughout Turkey and Europe.Music is a fundamental element of his life, by which he tries to communicate his great values: love, respect and truth. In 1981 Arto moved to United States to explore new creative influences and to add a new dimension to his own vision of life. Since then, he has given solo concerts of his own music throughout the world. In 1985 two solo albums were released on the Dutch Keytone Label: Virginland and Main Root.He started a meaningful cooperation with the Armenian oud player Ara Dinkjian, with whom he recorded in duo Tears of Dignity and Onno for the Greek label Libra Music. Two wonderful albums in which music "has the sound of my life" using Arto's words. Onno is the homage to his brother Onno Ohannes Tunçboyaciyan suddenly disappeared in 1996, in which compositions are a clear expression of Arto's memories of his brother when he was alive and after his death. With Ara Dinkjian he founded as well the group NIGHT ARK and recorded the following albums: Picture, Moments, Wonderland and Petals On Your Path (released in February 2000 by Universal Music).In 1998 he participated at the Italian project TRIBOH, conceived and co-led with the vocalist Maria Pia De Vito and the pianoplayer Rita Marcotulli, recording the CD Triboh for the Italian label Polosud.He is a member of the group WALKING FISH together with Matthew Garrison, Jim Beard, Gene Lake and Bob Malach. Recently his latest album with Paul Winter Every Day is a New Life has been released by Living Music. Currently he is working with Armenian musicians with whom he founded his new group THE ARMENIAN NAVY BAND, a small orchestra rooted in Armenian and Anatolian traditional music with the inspiration and sound of today. The project was born in 1998 after the meeting in Yerevan with young Armenian musicians coming from different music experiences (ethnic and contemporary Armenian music). Since then the idea to create a group which could represent the sound of Armenia of today became concrete. The two albums that represent the current aspects of Arto's music search are Avci, a movie soundtrack composed by the artist, and Bzidik Zinvor. Bzidik Zinvor has been recorded in Armenia and is the result of the very first meeting with several musicians from Yerevan. Arto's original compositions express the sound of the past generations along with today's life: this is what he calls "avantgarde folk". During the year 2000 THE ARMENIAN NAVY BAND has been touring Europe receiving great acclaim from the audience and enthusiastic music criticism. This experience will be collected in the next CD recorded in Istanbul for the Turkish label Imaj Müzik. In 1981 Arto moved to United States to explore new creative influences, to add a new dimension to his own vision of life, and to escape from the subtle restrictions on identity he had to face as part of the Armenian minority in Turkey. Since then, he has performed both as a member of various musical groups and also as a solo artist throughout the world. In 1985 his first solo album was released by the Dutch label Keytone: Virginland and Main Root. It was during this time that Arto started a meaningful collaboration with the Armenian oud player Ara Dinkjian. Arto invited Dinkjian to record the duo project Tears of Dignity with him and also the 1998 album entitled 'Onno' - an homage to Arto's brother and mentor, Onno Ohannes Tun?boyaciyan who tragically died in a plane crash in 1996. The compositions on this album are a clear expression of Arto's memories of his brother, 27 years his close friend, music collaborator and teacher. Along with Ara Dinkjian, Arto was a member of the group "Night Ark" which recorded following CDs: Picture, Moments, Wonderland and Petals On Your Path. In 1998 Arto participated in the Italian project TRIBOH with singer Maria Pia Vito and pianist Rita Marcotulli. As result of this collaboration, the album Triboh was recorded and released on the Italian label Polosud. Arto's album "Every Day is a New Life" was created out of his collaboration with Paul Winter. "Aile Muhabbeti", another CD, was released in Turkey as a soundtrack for the film of the same name. Arto composed and performed this CD with various Armenian and Turkish musicians. To his Anatolian friends and fans, Arto devoted the album "T?rke s?zl? hafif anadolu m?zigi" ('Light anatolian music with Turkish words'.) This album was recorded in winter 2002/3 and had been finally released in Turkey in Spring 2005. In February 2004, Arto Tun?boyaciyan recorded his new solo-project "Artostan" in Yerevan - a selection of songs from his solo performances - a radiophonic travel diary through Arto's unlimited soundscapes and his philosophical homeland. Contemporaneous is the album "Love Is Not in Your Mind" - a duo project with the pianist of the Armenian Navy Band Vahagn Hayrapetyan - a very personal declaration of love dedicated to his mother. The international release of these both albums was in January 2005 by Heaven and Earth. The Armenian Navy Band was founded by Arto Tun?boyaciyan, the band's charismatic composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He was born in Galateria (near Istanbul) as a son of a poor shoemaker family of Armenian-Anatolian descent. From a very young age, music has been a fundamental element of life, by which Arto tries to communicate his greatest values: love, respect and truth. After performing music for more than 30 years on all the important stages in the world and attempting repeatedly to discover open-minded and enthusiastic musicians, Arto Tun?boyaciyan realized that he wasn't finding them either in the Western jazz scene nor in his Anatolian homeland. He was looking for musicians able to make his "sound worlds" audible in the form he had wanted for a long time and which fit his identity. After a first short visit in 1996 to the country of his ancestors, he returned to the Armenian capital of Yerevan in 1998. There he met the young and very talented pianist and keyboader Vahagn Hayrapetyan, son of a well-known musical family in Armenia. He asked Vahagn to introduce him to other musicians in town to see if eventually he could start a new band project with in Yerevan. At the first session organized by Arto and Vahagn, ten young, outstanding and exuberant musicians joined the rehearsals. They are until today the core of the Armenian Navy Band. Some months later, in 1999, the band recorded its first album entitled "Bzdik Zinvor" out of a small studio in Yerevan, followed by its first European tour in 2000, where this unique group of musicians gained the hearts of audiences in Italy, Germany, Austria and Spain with their Avantgard Folk Music.
