Last year, the Foundation extended its activities to the embattled enclave of Nagorno-Karabagh, where native Armenians have waged a daring self-determination struggle against Azerbaijani occupation. Today, the Foundation pursues the rebuilding and resettlement of strategic border-zones, where inhabitants remain especially vulnerable. In the photo above, Foundation consultants instruct villagers on how to revive abandoned grape vineyards in the "Lachin Corridor" connecting Karabagh to Armenia.

"Armenian Forests" NGO: Destruction of Armenia's forests is now reaching tragic levels. Having once covered 45% of Armenia, forests now cover barely 8-9%. In order to help reverse this damaging trend, the Foundation initiated the "Armenian Forests" NGO in 2002. To date, AFNGO has undertaken several successful reforestation efforts and is now working to improve forest policy and its enforcement. In its first major effort, AFNGO went to the Odzun village where it hired local residents to plant and care for 125,000 trees on 100 hectares, in what will become the first community forest of modern Armenia. In the photo above, project staff measure progress of replanted trees. Thanks to the diligence of staff and local workers, these trees underwent a remarkable first-year survival rate of 91 percent.
