Биография
Родился в 1916 году в Нью-Йорке. Его родители были беженцами из города Вана.
Учился в общественной школе. Закончил Университете Калифорнии, Беркли по специальности английский язык в конце 1930-х гг. Учился там в аспирантуре, получив степень магистра в области образования, а затем учился в школе «Pacific School of Religion», которую окончил в 1944 году.
Был рукоположен на служение в православной пресвитерианской церкви. В середине 1940-х годов работал в миссии китайцев в Сан-Франциско, а затем в племени шошонов в штате Айдахо.
