(1904-1948) Американский художник-абстракционист

Биография

Родился 15 апреля 1904 в Хоркоме (турецкая провинция Ван).

Спасаясь от войны и связанных с нею преследований армянского населения, перебрался с родными в Тифлис, а затем в Батум (1919).

В 1920 семья эмигрировала в США.

Посещал Рисовальную школу штата Род-Айленд в Провиденсе.

Деятельность

В 1926-1931 преподавал в Рисовальной школе и Центральном художественном училище в Нью-Йорке.

В своем псевдониме соединил имя «Аршил» (армянское «Ахилл») с фамилией «Горки» (в честь М. Горького).

В 1946 масса его картин погибла в результате пожара в студии.

К пожару прибавились и другие несчастья, в том числе автокатастрофа (1948), искалечившая правую руку.

Умер 21 июля 1948 в городе Шерман (штат Коннектикут).
