Saint Astvatsatsin church was built in 1321 by the architect and sculptor Momik. A tympanum at the church’s western entrance carries a splendid relief of the Virgin and a relief representing the Evangelists on the four pendentives. Areni sculpture is an outstanding achievement of decorative sculpture of Medieval Armenia.
