The first consolidation of Armenian emigrants and the establishment of the first Armenian Diaspora Community was taken place in Ustre, where many Armenian workers were working in the local Iron Wire Plant. In 1888 here in Ustre for the first time in the history of the American Armenians so called "Kachar Haykakan" Armenian Academy) was organized, which was also called "Kachar Haykakan Ustri Lusavorchakan Hayots" (Armenian Academy of Ustre Apostholic Armenians). M. Portugalian had actively participated in the organization of the Kachar. Kachar aimed at organizing lectures on Armenian history, literature, Armenian Cause and other topics. In the same year the Armenians have undertaken to built the first Armenian Church in America.
