Founding Century: XIV Founding Date : 1321 Region: Vayots Dzor Location: village of Vernashen
A church and original belfry on two pylons date back to 1321. Remnants of a large gavit lie in the western part of the church with a tympanum relief depicting The Virgin and the Child, considered among the best in Armenian architecture. This same church was the original repository of a relief portrait of Prince Chacha with his son. Amir Asan (now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia) and Amir Asan’s hunting scene (in the State Museum of Armenian History).
