OVERVIEW
Gandzasar, as an organization, was founded in 1991, with the blessing of His Holiness the Catholicos of All Armenians and under the auspices of the Diocese of Artsakh and its Primate, Bishop Pargev Mardirosian. With the collapse of the communist regime and subsequent independence of Armenia, the foundation of an organization such as Gandzasar became imperative, in order to respond to the spiritual reawakening of the Armenian people in their homeland. Since its inception, Gandzasar has carried out a vigorous program of theological research and publications, among which is the biannual Gandzasar Theological Review.
Recently, in view of the gradual broadening and developing scope of the organization - as well as its vital study and publications of the spiritual heritage of the Armenian Church - in June 1994, the organization established the Gandzasar Theological Center in Armenia's capital, Yerevan.
The Center has affiliations with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Matenadaran (Manuscripts Library), various Institutes of the State University of Yerevan and other related academic organizations of Armenia.
Today, the Center has a staff of forty scholars, technical support personnel, editors, artists and graphic designers, typist and support personnel.

RESEARCH
Unpublished theological texts are studied and critical
texts are prepared, with the parallel modern Armenian translation. Patristic works that have already been published are translated into modern Armenian, together with analysis and introduction to highlight the rich spiritual treasures of the Armenian Church.
Joint studies with other institutes are carried out in the fields of history, philology, cultural studies and other related subjects. Such studies have been done with the Institutes of Oriental Studies, History, Language of the National Academy of Sciences, the Matenadaran and others.
For instance, Armenian religious culture is studied jointly with scholars of art, artists, architects and musicologists. The purpose of such studies is to recover the authentic characteristics and canons
of Armenian religious architecture, music, miniature paintings, frescos, khatchkars (cross-stones), and liturgical vestments and objects. Recently, one of these joint studies was applied on the reconstruction of the complex of the Monastery of Aghjots.
The Center carries out various activities for the propagation of Armenian Christian faith. Lectures, seminars, talks, study groups, discussions are organized regularly, as a means of making the scholars of the Center available to the immediate and direct spiritual needs of the people and as a basis of praxis of our ongoing research. All the research at the Center is enhanced by modern computer technology.

CHARITABLE OFFICE
As a nonprofit religious organization, an office of Gandzasar Center carries out charitable activities, such as helping poor families and disadvantaged senior citizens.
Since September 1993, an orphanage was opened through the efforts of the Center. The orphanage, named Zatik, cares not only for the physical needs of the children, now 120, but their educational and spiritual needs as well. The children are brought up in the spirit of Christian love, devotion and virtues.
Through the efforts of the Center, in 1994, a substantial donation was made by Austrian Caritas to the orphanage.
