Michael Maluntsian Conductor (1903-1973)

Maestro Maluntsian was a conductor and pedagogue.

People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia since 1956.

He was trained as cellist at the conservatory in Tbilisi, but later, in 1935, he graduated from Moscow conservatory, where he studied conducting under Professor Ginsbourg.

Michael Maluntsian served two tenures (from 1945 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1967) as an Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Maluntsian was the first interpreter of many works of Armenian composers premiered by the orchestra. He also played major role in popularization of European classical orchestral repertoire in Armenia.

Maestro Maluntsian gave podium to many prominent conductors, giving the orchestra an opportunity to discover different approaches to music. During his two tenures many famous musicians performed in Yerevan accompanied by the APO.

His era was also marked with touring throughout the former USSR, performing in concert halls of Moscow, Leningrad (St.Petersburg), Baltic republics, Ukraine and Trans Caucasus.

His teaching career started in 1927 at Yerevan Komitas conservatory, where he acquired professorship in 1962. He trained well-known Armenian conductors - Rafael Mangassarian and David Khanjian. He was also on the faculty of Moscow Tchaikovsky conservatory during the period of 1934 to 1945.

российский дирижер, педагог, народный артист Армянской ССР (1956). Главный дирижер Симфонического оркестра Армении. Профессор Ереванской консерватории (с 1962 г.), преподавал в Московской консерватории.
