HISTORY

The Armenian Apostolic Church of Whittier was established in June of 2004 when the Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian assigned Rev. Fr. Nareg Matarian as the Parish Priest and Deacon Vahe Charkhutian as the Parish Chairman. Soon after that a group of devoted individuals were appointed by the Primate as the First Parish Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Whittier. Members of the first parish council of-the Armenian Church of Whittier are as follows:

Rev. Fr. Nareg Matarian - Pastor Dn. Vahe Charkhutian - Chairman Mr. Kevork Tavoukjian - Vice Chairman Mrs. Rose Kassardjian - Secretary Mr. Hratch Ajemian - Accountant Miss Sona Arabajian - Advisor Mr. Hratch Satamian – Advisor

An agreement was made with St. Stephen's Episcopal Church of Whittier to use their church facilities as a worship and activity center of the newly established Armenian Church of Whittier.

The first Divine Liturgy was officiated by the Primate on Sunday June 6, 2004, the newly appointed Parish Priest and Council members were introduced to the faithful gathered for the first service and all heard the Primates message, and received his blessings and best wishes.

Over 150 faithful were gathered along with representatives of several Armenian organizations. Rev. Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian and members of St. Gregory Armenian Church of Pasadena choir and Deacons joined during the Badarak. Mrs. Elide Tashjian conducted the choir.

Rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, The Very Rev. Pam Mulac was present at the service. A reception followed the church service at the Parish Hall.

During the first meeting of the newly appointed parish council, it was decided to hold church services on the First Sunday of every month. On Sunday August 1, 2004, the Very Rev. Asbed Balian was invited to celebrate Badarak and Bless the Grapes.

In September of 2004 Rev. Fr. Asoghig Jamgotchian was appointed by the Primate to become the new Parish Priest, replacing Fr. Matarian. Fr. Asoghig celebrated his first Badarak in Whittier on Sunday September 5, 2004.

On Sunday September 12, 2004 the First Annual Picnic of the Whittier church was organized and over 175 people attended the event, which was a huge event.

Food was prepared and donated by Mr. & Mrs. Khachig Hovagimian. On Sunday October 3, 2004 all Armenian students living in the area were invited to join the faithful at the Badarak and receive the holy communion as the new academic year started.

On Tuesday November 16, 2004 the First Annual Thanksgiving dinner celebration was organized and was attended by the Primate His Eminence The Armenian Apostolic Church of Whittier was established in June of 2004 when the Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian assigned Rev. On Friday March 4, 2005 a Michink (midlent) Dinner celebration was organized and Rev. Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian of St. Gregory Armenian Church of Pasadena was invited to preside the short service and give a sermon on the event.

On Friday March l 8, 2005 during a meeting with the Primate at the Diocese headquarters the new ladies committee was organized under the leadership of Mrs. Beatrice Kaimian and all members received the Primates Blessings. Members of the new Ladies Committee are as follows:

In March of 2005 the First Issue of Badkam, the official newsletter of the Armenian Church of Whittier was published and mailed to over 300 families in the area.

On Friday May 6, 2005 the First Annual celebration of Mother's Day organized with over 150 people in attendance.

On Sunday August 14, 2005 the second annual picnic was organized and the blessing of the Grapes was celebrated in an outdoor picnic area of the church grounds. Rev. Fr. Tavit Zenneyan Pastor of the Armenian Church of Burbank was invited for the Blessing of the Grapes. Rev. Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian of St. Gregory was in attendance.

On Sunday September l 1, 2005 the Armenian Church of Whittier celebrated its First Anniversary as a new parish of the Western Diocese under the Auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, and was sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Misak and Rita Topalian and Mrs. Alice Bilemjian in addition of two other anonymous faithful.

In attendance were the following clergy. Rev. Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian of St. Gregory Church. Rev. Fr. Joseph Poules of the Coptic Church of Anaheim. Rev. Mary Trainor of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Several representatives of different Armenian organizations were in attendance as well.

Miss Lena Kaimian was the MC. A well-selected Armenian cultural program was introduced to the guests. Senator Chuck Poochigian and his wife arrived to surprise the guests and highlighted the event.

On Sunday November 20, 2005 the Second celebration was organized. Annual Thanksgiving Dinner.

On Friday January 6, 2006 a short service and Dinner was organized by the Ladies Committee on the occasion of the Armenian Christmas and over 1 50 people attended the event.

On Saturday February 25, 2006 a special Ladies Committee luncheon was organized on the occasion of the Great Paregentan, which was sponsored and hosted by Mrs. Berjouhi Nalbandian at her residence. Donations were made to the Ladies Committee of the Armenian Church of Whittier. The event was a huge success.
