Avet Terteryan (1929-1994) is one of the most prominent composers of the end of the 20th century, uniqueness and authenticity of those heritage make him one of the most significant artists of our millennium.

Avet Terteryan is a People`s Artist of the USSR and Armenia, Armenian State Prize winner, professor of the Yerevan Conservatory. Avet Terteryan is one of those who once were the core of the famous Soviet Avant garde composers group, and whose oeuvre belongs now to the world music culture. Avet Terteryan is the author of eight symphonies (the ninth had never been finished), two operas, a ballet, vocal symphony series, two quartets a sonata for piano and cello, and a number of chamber pieces for voice. His second opera Earthquake (in German) was ordered by the German EDIZION PETERS publishers house, the Sixth Symphony by the French LEDUC, the Seventh Symphony - by the Polish Ministry of Culture, the Second String Quartet - by the American CHRONOS-QUARTET.

Avet Terteryan`s compositions have been widely performed at various international festivals, throughout Germany, France, UK, USA, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Finland, and Yugoslavia, in the best concert halls of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the CIS. His heritage is the subject of the extensive studies by musicologists, philosophers, psychologists, all those open to the conception of a unique world in its horizontal and vertical sections. Avet Terteryan is a truly national artist, whose understanding of music is a continuation of the nature-cosmological approach known in Armenia since the antiquity. His music possesses a great spiritual potential that influences the audience notwithstanding their nationality, social background, or religious feelings.

In 1994, the government of Brandenburg, Germany, arranged a possibility for Avet Terteryan to live and work in Germany for the period of six month. The same year he was awarded the DAAD scholarship for the year 1995.

In December 1994 at the Sverdlovsk State Philharmonia (the city of Yekaterinburg) was held a festival of Avet Terteryan`s music, its program including six symphonies and the vocal symphonic series Fatherland, and which came to be the composer`s memorial: Avet Terteryan died in Yekaterinburg on December 11, 1994, shortly after his return from Germany.

On July 29, 1995 (the 66th anniversary of the Armenian master) at the Armenian Society of Relations with Foreign Countries was presented the Avet Terteryan Cultural Foundation, established on the initiative of the Arts Institute of the National Academy of Armenia, the Armenian Ministry of Culture, the Armenian Peace Fund, the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the composer`s son (currently living in Argentina), and the composer`s wife.
