The first meeting of the St. Gregory parish took place in June of 1947 attended by 23 faithful. Soon a temporary committee formed with seven members who quickly raised the number of parishioners to forty. The Parish Council met for the first time in October of 1947, having received the approval of Archbishop Vartan Kasparian, Primate.

The parish purchased a church on Michigan Avenue which was consecrated with the name St. Gregory the Illuminator on October 12, 1951 by Archbishop Mampre Malayan, Primate. The Ladies’ Society also formed chaired by Virginia Asadourian and on May 15, 1954 the church welcomed the first permanent Pastor, Rev. Fr. Tatoul Yeretsian, from Damascus. Immediately following the church choir was formed led by Setrag Vartian.

Fourteen years later the parish moved to its current location on Colorado Boulevard and began renovating the newly purchased property, namely the church and hall. A Building Committee was formed chaired by Jack Jandegian, and upon the completion of the edifice the Church was consecrated by Primate Bishop Torkom Manoogian on October 17-18, 2004.

Six Pastors have served the church in the years between 1964 and 2003: Rev. Fr. Tatoul Yeretsian, Archpriest Fr. Vartan Dulgarian, Rev. Fr. Nareg Marfalezian, Archpriest Fr. Moushegh Tashjian, Very Rev. Fr. Asbed Balian, Rev. Fr. Vazken Movsesian and Rev. Fr. Asoghig Jamgochian. On January 1, 2004 Archpriest Dr. Fr. Zaven Arzoumanian, who was invited from the Eastern Diocese by the Primate of the Western Diocese Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, assumed the position of Pastor of St. Gregory Armenian Church. Under his leadership construction of the new sanctuary began and the Agajanian Hall was renovated.

St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church sponsors the Alfred and Marguerite Hovsepian School, the only Armenian Day School that functions under the auspices of the Western Diocese. The school was established 20 years ago under the leadership of Archpriest Fr. Moushegh Tashjian, Pastor of the time, and with the support of Jack Jandegian and Andrew Meymarian. It was completed with the construction of the Calustian-Dunaians Hall, through the contribution of Mr. and Mrs. George and Flora Dunaians.

Currently the Parish of St. Gregory is involved in the construction of a new, larger church building. At present the Church organizations include the Parish Council the Ladies’ Society, Men’s Forum, Building Committee, ACYO, Choir, Sunday School and Saturday School.St. Gregory Armenian Church
